Referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU will be held without Transnistria

The referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union cannot be organized on the Transnistria, as this region is not controlled by the Moldovan authorities. This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu in an interview with the Romanian publication Veridica, UNN reports with reference to DW.

Polling stations cannot can be opened on the territory of the Transnistrian region, as it is not controlled by constitutional bodies

- Sandu said.

She noted that residents of the left bank of the Dniester can come to vote at polling stations on the right bank.

Context

The President of Moldova signed the country's application to join the European Union in March 2022. A few months later, Chisinau received the status of an EU candidate. On December 14, 2023, following following a two-day summit, the European Council decided to start negotiations with Moldova on accession to the European Union.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu instructed the the parliament to organize a referendum on the country's accession to the EU and announced that she would run in the 2024 presidential election.
