Pletenchuk on demining the Black Sea: international experience shows that this is a job for years

Currently, there may be about 400 sea mines in the Black Sea, but this is a rather approximate number, because given the number of mines and explosive devices that were deposited as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by the Russians, it is difficult to calculate. The operation to clear the Black Sea of mines may take years. This was stated by Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, during a telethon on Thursday, UNN reports.

Details

"The latest official figures announced are four hundred mines, but this is a rather approximate number, because given the number of mines and explosive devices that were planted as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by the Russians, it is quite difficult to calculate. The Dnipro was very densely mined there. Of course, the big water washed it all away. This applies to the Dnipro-Bug estuary. This will affect civilian shipping in Mykolaiv ports. This number can only be determined during the Black Sea demining operations. The global experience of similar conflicts tells us that this is a job for years," Pletenchuk said.

Recall

Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria have launched a joint mine-sweeping force in the Black Sea to improve the safety of shipping, especially during Ukrainian grain exports.
