As part of the study coordinated by the World Health Organization, patients receive a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies MBP134, the antiviral drug remdesivir, and optimized supportive therapy. The trial is being conducted in the Ituri province, where the highest number of cases has been recorded.

The outbreak is the largest for this Ebola strain

According to the WHO, the study has an adaptive format that will allow it to continue during future outbreaks if the current epidemic ends before sufficient results are obtained.

This gives real hope that we can achieve concrete results for the communities at the center of the outbreak

– said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The current outbreak has already affected nearly 1,600 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda, becoming the largest in history for the Bundibugyo strain. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments for this particular variant of the virus.
