The new NATO command in the German city of Wiesbaden has begun work on the coordination of Western military assistance to Ukraine. This was announced by the Alliance's Secretary General Mark Rutte, UNN reports citing Reuters.
According to Reuters, the command is taking over the coordination of aid from the United States in what is widely seen as a move to protect the support mechanism from NATO-skeptical U.S. President-elect Donald Trump .
"NATO's Wiesbaden Command for Security Assistance and Training Assistance to Ukraine has already started its work," Rutte told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Reuters writes that Trump, who will take office in January, has said he wants to end the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible, without specifying how he is pursuing that. He has long criticized the extent of U.S. financial and military aid in Ukraine.
The headquarters of the new NATO mission in Ukraine, called NATO Security and Training Assistance to Ukraine (NSATU), is located at the U.S. Clay Barracks base in the German city of Wiesbaden.
The U.S.-led Ramstein Group of about 50 countries has been coordinating Western military supplies to Kiev since 2022.
It will continue to exist as a political forum as NSATU takes over the military implementation of the decisions made there.
"However, diplomats recognize that the NATO handover could have a limited effect, given that the United States under Trump could still deal Ukraine a serious blow by reducing its support, as it is the Alliance's dominant force and supplies most of the weapons to Kiev," the report said.
