MyHeritage will cease operations in Russia and delete all user data, including DNA tests, by February 1, 2025. The decision was made due to local legislation after a fine of 1.5 million rubles.

MyHeritage, the world's largest genealogy service, has announced that it is shutting down its operations in Russia, and that Russians' accounts, including DNA tests, will be deleted from February 1, 2025. Users of the service received a corresponding message, UNN writes with reference to Radio Liberty.

Details

MyHeritage justified its decision by saying that it was forced to suspend its services due to local legislation. Russian account holders were advised to export their data before it was deleted.

In January 2022, MyHeritage was fined one and a half million rubles for refusing to store data on Russians in Russia.

For reference

In 2015, Russia passed a law requiring both Russian and foreign companies to store user data on servers in Russia. A major service blocked for violating the rule was the social network LinkedIn.
