Lack of time and stress: why Ukrainians put off books - survey

Ukrainians most often choose to read books for self-development, relaxation, or to seek new knowledge. Despite this, lack of time remains the main reason why many people do not read.  This is stated in a report by Info Sapiens commissioned by the Ukrainian Book Institute, UNN reports.

Why do Ukrainians read?

The main reasons for reading books in 2024 were:

- Self-improvement/self-development - 43% (in 2023, this figure was 41%);

- love of reading - 38% (in 2023 - 42%);

- recreation and distraction-31% (in 2023 – 28%);

- desire to learn something new – 23% (in 2023 – 22%);

- reading atmosphere-15% (in 2023-13%);

- reading based on recommendations - 13% (the figure has remained unchanged since 2023);

- the usual way to spend free time - 12% (in 2023 - 11%);

- leisure availability – 11% (in 2023 – 13%).

The influence of film adaptations on readers ' preferences is highlighted separately. In 2024, 10% of respondents indicated that they were interested in a book after watching a movie based on it, while in 2023 there were only 6% of them. Most often, these are young people aged 16 to 29 years and women.

At the same time, the proportion of those who read to learn about the life experiences of others decreased from 10% in 2023 to 8% in 2024.

How many books do Ukrainians read?

The segment of people who read 1 to 4 books a year remains the most popular reading category.

Why don't Ukrainians read?

Among the reasons why some Ukrainians do not read books:

- Lack of time - 45%;

- physical difficulties (vision, health) - 27%;

- lack of need or desire to read - 24%.

Interestingly, older respondents (40+) are more likely to recall physical difficulties, and residents of the South and east of the country Note stress due to war, which makes it difficult to concentrate.

In 2024, compared to 2023, the number of people who find time to read increased, and the proportion of those who point out physical difficulties decreased. The number of those who believe that there are no good books has also significantly decreased – their share has decreased to 3%.

What do Ukrainians know about the eBook program?

The survey showed a low level of awareness about the state program ecniga:

- 65% of respondents heard about it for the first time;

- 27% have heard, but are not sure they know the details;

- 7% are familiar with the program;

- 1% found it difficult to answer.

The study shows an increase in interest in reading among Ukrainians, especially among young people, as well as new trends in the formation of reading preferences.

Interviews for adults (16+) were conducted by phone. The study covered the entire territory of Ukraine, except for the uncontrolled territories.

Starting from December 16, Ukraine will launch the ekniga Program for 18-year-olds. through Diya, it will be possible to receive UAH 908 for the purchase of books in Ukrainian in paper, electronic or audio format.
