The ISIS group has claimed responsibility for an explosion at a Catholic service in the southern Philippines that killed at least four people and injured dozens. This was reported by Al Jazeera, according to UNN.

Caliphate soldiers detonated an explosive device at a large gathering of Christians... in the city of Marawi,

- ISIS said in a statement on Telegram.

Details

The explosion took place on Sunday at a gymnasium at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City, where ISIS militants waged a five-month siege in 2017 that killed more than 1,000 people.

Earlier, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned the "senseless and most heinous acts committed by foreign terrorists".

It is noted that the United States Department of State condemned the "horrific terrorist attack" and stated that it supports Filipinos in rejecting violence.

Philippine security officials suggested on Sunday that the attack may have been retaliation for a military operation about 200 km (125 miles) from the city of Marawi that killed 11 Islamist rebels.

On Monday, police said they suspected at least two people.

In order not to impede the investigation, we will not disclose the names,

- said regional police chief Allan Nobleza.

Mindanao State University said on Sunday it was "deeply saddened" by the "senseless and horrific act" and suspended classes until further notice.
