The explosion took place on Sunday at a gymnasium at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City, where ISIS militants waged a five-month siege in 2017 that killed more than 1,000 people.

Earlier, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned the "senseless and most heinous acts committed by foreign terrorists".

It is noted that the United States Department of State condemned the "horrific terrorist attack" and stated that it supports Filipinos in rejecting violence.

Philippine security officials suggested on Sunday that the attack may have been retaliation for a military operation about 200 km (125 miles) from the city of Marawi that killed 11 Islamist rebels.
