Due to the bad weather, a state of emergency was declared in the regions of Coquimbo and Atacama. According to preliminary data, more than a thousand residential buildings have been damaged.
Chilean President José Antonio Kast ordered the military to be involved in eliminating the consequences of the disaster and providing assistance to the affected areas.
A month's worth of precipitation fell in one day
According to AFP, on Sunday alone, some areas of the country received an amount of precipitation that usually corresponds to a month's norm.
Rescue services continue to search for the missing and assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods.
