Former FBI agent who helped Russians circumvent sanctions is convicted in the US

In New York, the Manhattan District Court has handed down a verdict in the case of of former FBI officer Charles McGonigal, whom prosecutors accused of working for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. This is reported by the Voice of America, according to UNN.

McGonigal, who worked in the New York branch of the of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was sentenced to 50 months in prison and a $40,000 fine.

Earlier, Charles McGonigal pleaded guilty and repented of his and instead of five years, which the prosecutor's office insisted on, the judge sentenced him to four years and to four years and two months.

The former FBI agent was accused of conspiring with a businessman close to the Kremlin in order to find dirt on Deripaska's Deripaska's rival, oligarch Vladimir Potanin.
