Finland reopens two border crossings with Russia for passenger traffic and asylum seekers until January 14, while other crossings remain closed.

The Finnish government decided to open two border crossing points on the border with Russia on December 14. Other border crossings on the eastern border remain closed. This was reported by UNN with reference to the Finnish Yle.

Details

On Thursday, Finland opens border crossings with Russia -  Vaalimaa and Niirala - for passenger traffic and asylum seekers. Other border crossings will remain closed for now. The decision will remain in force until January 14.

It is noted that if traffic on the border with Russia becomes more intense, all border crossings in the east of the country may be closed again.

According to Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the government was unanimous in its decision, and there were no disagreements between the parties.

"Without lifting the restrictions, we will not be able to check whether there are changes for the better. If this phenomenon continues, we will close these border crossings," Reuters quoted the prime minister as saying.

To recap

Finland closed all road transport points on the border with Russia for two weeks starting from midnight on November 30, citing national security risks associated with Russia's hybrid operations.
