Finnish border guards have warned of the risk of an oil spill due to the fleet of so-called ghost tankers that transport Russian oil through the Baltic Sea despite sanctions. This was reported by UNN with reference to AFP.
Details
Russia has deployed a fleet of "ghost tankers" to sell oil in circumvention of international sanctions, and the threat of a major oil spill is growing in the Baltic Sea, said Mikko Simola, head of the maritime security department of the Finnish Border Guard, in a comment to Agence France-Presse.
According to the official, 70 such vessels with 100,000 tons of crude oil on board pass through the Gulf of Finland every week after being loaded in various Russian ports.
There is an "increased risk of accidents with environmental consequences
"The number of tanker trips in the area is 'approximately the same or even higher than before Russia's attack on Ukraine,'" the Finnish Border Guard Service said.
Recall
Finland will not open the land border with Russia after April 14, all checkpoints will be closed "until further notice." The decision was made at a government meeting on April 4, UNN reports with reference to the Finnish Interior Ministry.
