EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas confirmed that Ukraine's future is unequivocally linked to membership in the European Union, but the EU enlargement process should be viewed not only from a technical but also from a geopolitical perspective. Answering a question about the realism of the scenario of Ukraine's rapid accession to the European Union, Kaja Kallas emphasized that work on this process is already underway, but the key factor remains the political will and ability of the EU to implement its own strategic decisions.
We are in a complex geopolitical world, and the enlargement of the European Union is first and foremost a geopolitical choice.
Kallas emphasized that the EU remains a space that countries voluntarily seek to join, and there are many such states today. At the same time, according to her, the European Union should not only declare openness to enlargement, but also demonstrate real results.
In the coming years, we must see real progress and new member states to make the European Union stronger and more influential in the geopolitical dimension.
The issue of statements by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who claimed the existence of an alleged "secret document" where 2027 is listed as the target date for Ukraine's accession to the EU, and which he publicly criticized, was also raised. Kaja Kallas did not provide direct confirmation of the existence of such a document, focusing on the general logic of the enlargement process and the strategic course of the European Union.
