Today, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the First Constitution. It was adopted at a meeting of the Cossacks near Tyagin (now Bender) on April 5, 1710. Today, the "Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk" celebrates its 315th anniversary, reports UNN.
Day of the First Constitution of Ukraine
The Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk is a monument of Ukrainian political-philosophical and legal thought. According to Ukrainian historians, it is one of the first European constitutions of modern times. However, the memory of it began to return only with the acquisition of Ukraine's independence.
The original document in Old Ukrainian was discovered in 2008 in the Russian State Archive, but Russia refused to hand it over to Ukraine.
On April 9, 2010, a monument to the Constitution was opened in Bendery, erected in honor of its 300th anniversary.
On August 10, 2021, on the 30th anniversary of Independence, the Latin version of the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk was delivered to Ukraine for the first time, which was temporarily exhibited in the National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv". In the same year, copies of the Orlyk Constitution were exhibited in the Parliament of Ukraine and the Office of the President.
