Bulgarian customs officers confiscated about 170 kg of cocaine from a ship carrying bananas from Ecuador, AP reports with reference to the Bulgarian prosecutor's office, UNN reports.
Details
District Prosecutor Georgi Chinev said the drugs were hidden in a fruit container on the cargo ship Madison 2, which also made a stop in Malta. He estimated the total value of the transported cocaine at 6.2 million euros.
According to the head of the customs office, Petya Bankova, this was the largest seizure of drugs in the port of Burgas.
According to her, the drugs were hidden in 150 packages hidden behind a factory wall in one of the fruit containers. The ship left the port after unloading. An investigation has been launched into the alleged recipients of the cocaine, who could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of drug trafficking.
It is noted that Bulgaria, which has taken measures against drug trafficking in recent years, is considered a transit point for cocaine from Latin America on its way to Western Europe.
