In the coming days, Ukrainians will be able to observe an interesting astrological phenomenon — the "Buck Moon." From an astronomical perspective, this is a normal lunar phase when the disk visible to the human eye is fully illuminated by the Sun. However, sometimes the July full moon coincides with a supermoon, making our planet's satellite appear larger and brighter.

When will the "Buck Moon" occur in 2026
According to the lunar phase calendar for Kyiv, the July full moon will occur on Wednesday, July 29, at 5:35 PM. This is the standard astronomical moment of the full moon, when the Moon is opposite the Sun relative to Earth. For residents of Ukraine, this is one of the most noticeable lunar phases in midsummer, when evenings are already long and the sky, under favorable weather, provides good conditions for observation.
Why the full moon is called "Buck"
The name originates from the legends and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of North America — members of the Algonquian tribes. They long noticed that in July, young male deer begin to rapidly grow new antlers.
What other names does the July full moon have
The July full moon has more than one name. In different traditions, it is also called:
- Thunder Moon — the name refers to the frequent and powerful thunderstorms in July;
- Hay Moon — in the agricultural calendar of our ancestors, the seventh month of the year marked the peak of haymaking for the coming winter;
- Berry Moon — the full moon phase in July coincided with the period of mass ripening of wild forest berries — strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
These names reflect the seasonal observations of our ancestors regarding weather, hay collection, and the natural cycle of summer.
When and how best to observe the full moon
The most convenient time to watch the "Buck Moon" is on the evening of July 29 and the following nights, when the sky darkens and the Moon is already clearly visible above the horizon. For Kyiv residents and visitors to the capital, sunset on that day will occur at 8:46 PM. So right after that, the full Moon will be best visible.
To observe this impressive astronomical phenomenon without hindrance, one should choose a location away from the city (outdoor street lighting will interfere with viewing the full moon), in an open space, and if possible, ensure the sky is not overcast with clouds.
Note that a telescope or other optical instruments will not be needed for those who enjoy stargazing and the Moon: the full moon will be visible to the naked eye.
At the same time, astronomers remind that the full moon is not always the best time to examine details on the Moon's surface. Due to strong illumination, the terrain is less visible than during phases when there are shadows on the disk.
If people simply want to admire the celestial body and photograph it, the "Buck Moon" will not be an obstacle.
