Details
It is noted that Hamas has submitted a new proposal to mediators for a three-stage plan that would end hostilities, according to two Egyptian officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the content of the sensitive discussions.
The first stage would be a six-week ceasefire that would lead to the release of 35 hostages - women, the sick and elderly - held by militants in Gaza in exchange for 350 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Hamas will also release at least five female soldiers in exchange for 50 prisoners, including some serving long sentences on terrorism charges, for each soldier.
Israeli troops will withdraw from two main roads in Gaza, allow displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza, which has been devastated by fighting, and allow the free flow of aid to the area, officials said.
In the second phase, both sides would declare a permanent ceasefire, with Hamas releasing remaining Israeli soldiers in exchange for new prisoners, officials said.
In the third stage, Hamas will hand over the bodies it holds in exchange for Israel lifting the blockade of Gaza and allowing reconstruction to begin, officials said.
The talks are expected to resume on Sunday afternoon, although, according to Egyptian officials, they may be postponed until Monday.
