In the St. George's complex in Lviv, a commemorative plaque was solemnly unveiled to mark the 25th anniversary of the apostolic visit of Saint Pope John Paul II to Ukraine. This was reported by the Lviv City Council, informs UNN.

Details

It is noted that it was in the Archcathedral of St. George that the Pontiff prayed, and he resided in the Metropolitan Chambers during his stay in Lviv in June 2001. These historical events are recalled by the inscription engraved on the commemorative plaque.

It is indicated that the main event within the framework of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the historic visit of Saint John Paul II to Ukraine was the Great Solemn Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

The service was joined by 120 priests and 43 bishops, including from Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, as well as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine - His Excellency Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas

Pope John Paul II visited Ukraine on an official visit in June 2001. It was the first official visit of the Head of the Catholic Church to Ukraine. The Pontiff visited Kyiv and Lviv.

In Lviv, the Pope was present on June 25-27, where he met with young people near the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sykhiv, and celebrated Liturgies in the Latin and Byzantine rites at the Lviv Hippodrome, during which he beatified 28 new martyrs of the UGCC and two spiritual figures of the RCC.
