A former participant in "schemes" spoke about the use of Sberbank and VTB databases and hacks of civilian services. Fraudsters gain access to accounts through SMS codes.

Client databases used by so-called "offices" to defraud people came from various sources over the years. This was revealed by a former participant in such schemes in a conversation with blogger Eva Korshyk, UNN reports.

Details

According to the man, there was no universal data source, and the approaches themselves changed depending on the period. He noted that in 2016-2017, according to older colleagues, working under the guise of the security service of the Russian "Sberbank" was common. This was explained by the fact that "Sberbank" was a popular financial institution, so it was possible to call almost anyone and convince the person that there was a problem with their account.

It all depends on the time. Starting from 2016-2017, the elders said that they worked for Sberbank. It was a classic Sberbank. They called under the Sberbank security service

- said the speaker.

He also stated that in 2022, a database of VTB clients appeared, which, according to him, became publicly available. The interlocutor claims that it contained data of people who were bank clients. At the same time, he added that, according to the version voiced within the scheme, this data could have been collected by hackers during a bank system breach.

In 2022, the VTB database appeared. It was "leaked" to some open access. We just had data of people who are VTB clients. As we were told, hackers "parsed" it

 - he said.

In addition, in recent years, according to the interlocutor, "offices" began to work through so-called "civil services," i.e., services used by a significant part of Russian citizens.

The essence of the scheme was to force a person, under any pretext, to provide an SMS code or otherwise open access to the service. For this, legends about problems with the intercom, mail, pension, or booking were used.

After gaining access, the person was "transferred" further to another participant in the scheme, who then worked with the victim, having their data from the internal cabinet of the service in front of them.

As soon as an SMS is intercepted, when we did it through social engineering, we get into civil services. After that, we transfer this client to a closer who already sees their data inside these services

- explained the interlocutor.
