The U.S. and Canada failed to reach a trade agreement due to disagreements over tariffs, digital services, and trade partnerships. Washington imposed a 50% tariff, and Ottawa is preparing a response.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada ended without a deal after the parties discovered significant discrepancies between the agreements and the wording in the draft document. Canada's ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, said this, Bloomberg reports, according to UNN.

Details

Wiseman said the talks did not break down because of one specific issue. According to him, during a detailed analysis, the Canadian side discovered that its understanding of the agreements reached differed substantially from what was written in the documents.

During a more detailed analysis, we discovered that our understanding of what had been agreed upon differed quite significantly from what was stated in the documents

- Wiseman said.

According to him, one of the key issues was tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Canada insisted on including these categories in the tariff exemptions because this is important for preserving the country's automotive manufacturing.

The United States and Canada are preparing new tariff measures

After the talks failed, the United States imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth approximately $20 billion. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory measures that are to take effect on September 8.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the proposed deal provided for lower tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber. According to him, Canada rejected the proposed terms.

Wiseman also said that the United States demanded limits on Canada's ability to conclude trade agreements with other countries. According to him, this was not about a specific state, but rather a broader demand that could have limited Canada's economic diversification.

Requirements concerning French-language content and digital services became a separate problem. Wiseman called this issue a "red line" for Ottawa, stressing that Canada was not prepared to limit its ability to protect and develop the French language in the country.

Ultimately, we are simply not prepared to agree to terms that were unfair, uneconomic and, in fact, called the reliability of the deal into question

- Wiseman said.
