For the celebration of the 250th anniversary of US independence, Washington plans to launch over 850 thousand fireworks – this will become the largest pyrotechnic show in the country's history. At the same time, scientists and specialists from the US National Park Service (NPS) warn that the massive fireworks display could cause a sharp deterioration in air quality and increase risks to human health and the environment. This is reported by Politico, as conveyed by UNN.
Record fireworks for the 250th anniversary of the USA
On the evening of July 4, the National Park Service plans to launch over 850 thousand fireworks over the US capital. For comparison, last year during the Independence Day celebration in Washington, about 7 thousand pyrotechnic devices were used.
The festive fireworks will be launched not only over the National Mall but also from eight barges on the Potomac River and from West Potomac Park.
Warning about dangerous air pollution
As the publication writes, internal NPS documents indicate that after the fireworks, the level of fine particulate matter could reach dangerous levels.
A preliminary air quality analysis prepared in May recommends avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure after the fireworks launch, as well as using N95 respirators for protection against fine particles.
At the same time, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that it is not responsible for monitoring the impact of the festive fireworks on air quality.
Scientists predict a sharp deterioration in air quality
Researchers note that fireworks release a huge amount of fine particulate matter into the air, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.
During a study of the festive fireworks in New York in 2023, the concentration of such particles in some areas increased to more than 3 thousand micrograms per cubic meter. For comparison, the EPA daily standard is 35 micrograms.
Experts believe that this year's show in Washington could be a unique opportunity to study the consequences of such a large-scale use of pyrotechnics.
Pollution could affect the Potomac River and wildlife
In addition to air pollution, scientists warn of a possible negative impact on the environment. Along with fireworks residues, perchlorates and heavy metals used to create bright colors could enter the Potomac River.
Due to the ongoing drought in the region, these substances may remain in the water longer.
Particular concern is raised by the impact on young fish, amphibians, and ospreys – birds of prey that are currently in their breeding season. Loud explosions could force adult birds to leave their nests, posing a threat to the chicks.
Fireworks pose risks to human health
According to experts, there is currently a lack of large-scale studies on the impact of festive fireworks on the number of hospitalizations for asthma or cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, doctors emphasize that people with respiratory diseases may react particularly acutely to a sharp deterioration in air quality.
The American Lung Association emphasizes that an increase in the scale of pyrotechnic shows automatically means an increase in health risks.
Experts advise avoiding smoke and using respirators
Specialists recommend watching fireworks from a greater distance, if possible staying indoors with closed windows, using air purifiers and N95 respirators.
People with asthma, chronic lung diseases, and cardiovascular conditions are advised to be especially cautious, as even short-term exposure to combustion products can worsen their condition.
