On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he recommended that the governor of South Carolina appoint the sister of Senator Lindsey Graham, Darlene Graham Nordon, to the seat of the late lawmaker after his sudden death over the weekend, UNN reports citing CNN.
"I recommended to Governor Henry McMaster the wonderful sister of Lindsey Graham, Darlene, for the position of interim senator from the great state of South Carolina," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "It would be a beautiful tribute to Lindsey, whom he loved very much!"
Under state law, McMaster can appoint an interim candidate to fill Graham's vacant seat. But since Graham was running for re-election this year, his death will trigger a primary election to replace him on the November ballot.
