In July, three cases of a new sub-variant of the Omicron coronavirus, FLiRT, were reported in Ukraine. Two of them were detected in Kyiv and one in Ivano-Frankivsk region. UNN reports this with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Health.

Three cases of the FLiRT sub-variant of the coronavirus were detected last week: two in Kyiv and one in Ivano-Frankivsk region. Two women and a man over 60 years of age fell ill

- said Chief State Sanitary Doctor Ihor Kuzin.

The FLiRT strain is reportedly derived from the Omicron variant. Due to specific mutations in the spike protein, the virus binds better to cells and avoids the immune response. That is, FLiRT affects weakened immune systems more quickly, and even previously vaccinated people can get sick. However, the acquired immunity after vaccination reduces the risk of complications during the disease.

The WHO has not yet provided a specific assessment of the risk of FLiRT, but notes that it needs to be monitored at the country level. Available studies show that current vaccines, including boosters, remain effective in protecting against severe forms of COVID-19, although they cannot completely prevent infection with the new strain, the Ministry of Health added

The agency reminded that  vaccination can be done at vaccination centers or in an outpatient clinic by making an appointment with your family doctor.
