The United States cannot predict the development of Russian-Chinese relations, as well as China's role as Russia's main strategic partner, including potential support for the Russian defense industry.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said at a briefing on July 16  that the United States cannot predict the development of relations between China and Russia, UNN reports.

We are witnessing further development of relations between China and Russia, and this is not only about the revival of the defense industrial base. It also has to do with the fact that China is a major strategic partner of Russia. You have seen the close ties between President Putin and President Xi, the visits between them. So I cannot predict where this will lead

- said Miller.

According to him,  the American side in the dialogue with Beijing said that the United States hoped that China could play a productive role in ending the conflict, but "it should be a role that recognizes who is the aggressor and who is the victim. And it was not only about "making peace for peace's sake," but also about making a peace that would be just and lasting for Ukraine.

"But ultimately, I can't tell you what they're going to do," Miller emphasized.

Addendum

NATO member states called on China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to cease all material and political support to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine has no absolute proof that weapons from China are reaching Russia.  China could also play a huge role in ending the war, in particular, by helping to put pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on this issue.
