The U.S. Senate, where Republicans hold the majority, voted to end hostilities against Iran, supporting a resolution that limits the ability to continue the war without congressional approval. Bloomberg reports this, writes UNN.
Details
The decision was supported by 50 senators, with 48 voting against. Thus, the Senate for the first time expressed support for ending the conflict, effectively diverging in positions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The resolution requires the cessation of military operations against Iran unless Congress separately authorizes their continuation.
Some Republicans supported the Democrats
Along with the Democrats, Republicans Lisa Murkowski, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul voted for the document.
At the same time, two influential Republican senators – Mitch McConnell and David McCormick – did not participate in the vote.
The practical impact of the decision remains unclear, as Washington and Tehran had previously reached a temporary peace agreement.
