The US Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing power plants in the PJM Interconnection area to operate at maximum capacity and temporarily exceed certain environmental standards.
PJM Interconnection supplies electricity to about 67 million people in 13 US states.
Backup generators allowed to be used as a last resort
Bloomberg notes that by a separate order, the Department of Energy also allowed the use of backup generators in the PJM region "as a last resort." Both decisions will be in effect until the end of the day on July 3, New York time.

Earlier, PJM asked federal authorities to introduce emergency measures, warning of a possible record demand for electricity due to forecast temperatures above 38°C.
According to the US National Weather Service, the heatwave will cover the area from Washington to Boston. Excessive heat warnings have been issued in more than two dozen states, and forecasters predict the setting or breaking of hundreds of temperature records.
