On Sunday, a Nigerian army statement said that Nigerian troops rescued 33 people who had been kidnapped while traveling to Zamfara State in the northwest of the country, UNN reports.

The military operation began after unidentified armed men kidnapped a group of people traveling through the Tsafe area of Zamfara on Saturday, army spokesman Aliyu Danja said in a statement. He did not specify who was behind the attack.
"The troops opened effective fire on the terrorists, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into the nearby bush," Danja said. "The troops then secured the area and rescued all 33 abductees."
The army is working to locate the "fleeing terrorists," he added.

Zamfara has experienced a surge in killings and kidnappings in recent months. In June alone, at least 32 people were killed in separate attacks in the state.
