Sarah Mullally met with Pope Leo at the Vatican and invited him to Britain. The leaders discussed issues of peace amid political pressure from the US.

Sarah Mullally, the first woman to lead the Church of England, met with Pope Leo at the Apostolic Palace on Monday and told the pontiff that a "warm welcome" awaits him if he visits the United Kingdom. This was reported by the BBC, according to UNN.

In an address following a private conversation between the two religious leaders, she stated that they are united by prayer for justice and for "peace in our world."

This comes after the Pope's warning earlier this month that the world is being "torn apart by several tyrants," as he criticized the cost of war during a visit to Cameroon.

Your Holiness, you have spoken powerfully about the many injustices in the modern world, but even more strongly about hope

- Mullally said.

The meeting took place several weeks after US President Donald Trump accused the Pope of being "weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy."

Pope Leo had expressed concern over Trump's threats that "an entire civilization will perish" if Iran did not agree to US demands to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz — a threat that did not materialize following a ceasefire agreement.

The pontiff stated that he would continue to "speak out loudly against war" and promote peace.

Mullally said that the Pope's message "reminded us that despite suffering, people long for a full life, and countless people work every day for this vision of the common good."

She also informed him that King Charles III "highly appreciated his recent visit," after they prayed together in October.

This symbolic moment marked the first time a British monarch has prayed at a public service alongside the head of the Catholic Church since the Reformation.

Please accept the assurance of a warm welcome from the Church of England, should you honor the United Kingdom with a visit

- Mullally said.

Pope Leo, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, recently returned from a trip to Africa, where he visited four countries.

The Archbishop described his pilgrimage as "full of life and joy."
