The European Commission is considering various options regarding Ukrainian refugees, including whether or not to extend temporary protection, which is currently in effect until March 2026, and seeks a joint solution, European Commission spokesman Markus Lammert said during a briefing on Monday, UNN writes.
We are considering various options, including whether or not to continue temporary protection, depending on developments, the transition to national statuses regarding work, education or family circumstances, as well as supporting those returning home to Ukraine. We need a joint European solution that can offer predictability, stability and a more balanced impact on the systems of member states.
According to him, the European Commission will "continue to support, coordinate and encourage joint discussion of the way forward".
"The EU remains committed to providing support to those fleeing Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine. (...) Thanks to the activation of the Temporary Protection Directive, more than 4.5 million Ukrainians have found safety, shelter and opportunities in EU member states. Last year, we extended the temporary protection framework until March 2026. This extension provides predictability and legal certainty for both Ukrainians and member states. Now we will need to consider possible options and steps for the future together and with Ukraine. We will work with the authorities of Ukraine and the member states on their choice," the spokesman of the European Commission noted.
