Kate Cox, 31, sought an abortion after her fetus was diagnosed with a deadly disease called Edwards syndrome, which doctors said threatened her fertility. A lower court had granted an exception, but that ruling was overturned on Monday. In its seven-page ruling, the Texas Supreme Court found that Kate Cox's doctor had failed to prove that her safety was threatened by a "life-threatening physical condition," as required by law.

Addendum

The case is believed to be the first time a woman has gone to court to seek an abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, giving individual states the right to control access to abortion. Texas has one of the strictest abortion bans in the United States.
