Sweden lowers the age of criminal responsibility to 13 and builds special prisons. The decision was made due to the active involvement of teenagers in criminal gangs.

Sweden plans to significantly toughen its approach to combating juvenile delinquency amid a sharp rise in shootings and explosions linked to gang activity. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

The country's government proposes lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 13. According to the new bill, minors convicted of the most serious crimes will be held in specially created prisons, including separate facilities for girls.

According to police data, there are approximately 17,500 active gang members in Sweden and another 50,000 associates. Criminal groups actively recruit teenagers through social media, and sometimes involve children as young as 11 in violent crimes.

The government believes that the previous approach of sending juvenile offenders to social institutions has failed to produce results. At the same time, some experts and politicians warn that imprisoning children may not solve the problem and will have negative long-term consequences.
