Poland's opposition Law and Justice party has elected historian Karol Nawrocki as its presidential candidate. He could become a serious political rival to the progressive mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, who was nominated for the presidency by the ruling Civic Coalition the day before. UNN writes about this with reference to Euronews.

Details

Historian Karol Nawrocki has become a presidential candidate of the Polish opposition party Law and Justice, one of whose most prominent members is former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

His candidacy was announced during the party's congress in Krakow. Nawrocki, 41, has been the head of the Institute of National Remembrance since 2021, a state body that stores archives and conducts research on the crimes of World War II and the communist era. He previously served as director of the World War II Museum in Gdansk, his hometown.

I know Poles and understand your needs. I am one of you and I want to become your president because I know and understand you: Poland has to be great to exist. We must defend Poland, we must defend our values, we must not allow our symbols to be taken away and our sovereignty to be limited

- Karol Navrotsky said during his speech.

According to observers, Nawrocki could become a serious political rival to the progressive mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, who was nominated as a presidential candidate by Donald Tusk's ruling Civic Coalition the day before. Both candidates have the best chance of making it to the second round of voting.
