According to journalists, the OpenAI team was informed about Shir's appointment by Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and member of the board of directors who was the key initiator of Altman's dismissal.
At the same time, Mira Murati, who was the company's CEO two days after Altman's dismissal, planned to bring him and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman back, who followed Altman. Instead, Sutskever says Altman will not be returning.

Recap
OpenAI's board of directors unexpectedly fired Sam Altman from his position and demoted president and co-founder Greg Brockman, leading to his dismissal. A number of senior researchers resigned as a result.
The reason for the dismissal was cited as insufficiently transparent communication, but it was not reported what exactly it was about. Over the weekend, there was talk of Altman returning to the company, and he told investors that if he did, he wanted a new board and management structure, sources told The Wall Street Journal.
Separately, he discussed creating a company that would employ former OpenAI employees, including those who quit in protest of his firing.
