The leader of the Canadian Green Party, Elizabeth May, said that President-elect Trump's “joke” about Canada being the 51st state of America is “not funny.” This was reported by UNN with reference to The Hill.
On social media, Trump mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him the “governor” of the “Great State of Canada.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other day with the Governor of the Great State of Canada, Justin Trudeau,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday.
“I look forward to meeting with the governor soon so that we can continue our in-depth negotiations on tariffs and trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for everyone!” Trump added.
Late last month, the president-elect made a similar jab at a close U.S. ally, suggesting that Canada become the 51st state. Last week, Trump went even deeper into this joke by posting an artificially generated photo of himself standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him.
When May was asked about Trump's post calling Trudeau “governor,” she said she had not seen it, but expressed concern about the post. “I haven't seen it... so I probably shouldn't comment on it,” May said.
“I'll just say that, given Truth Social's post about Donald Trump putting a Canadian flag on a Canadian mountain, I have to say that to the extent that this 51st state thing was a joke, it's not funny, and I find that chasing this on social media makes me increasingly nervous,” she continued.
May called for unity in Canada's party ranks to protect the country's reputation on the world stage.
“We've got to be very, very careful with the president-elect, and we've got to come together, I think, all the opposition party leaders and the prime ministers, all the elements of the Canadian political establishment that we are, better come together to make sure that we don't create any cracks that allow Fox News or Mr. Trump's social media to use us and say things about Canada that are not true,” May said.
