The negative effect of smoking on human health is almost twice as great as it was believed over the past 25 years.

Writes UNN with reference to The Guardian.

A new assessment of the harm of cigarettes has found that they shorten life expectancy  more than doctors previously thought. Researchers from University College London listed the negative effects of smoking and concluded that smoking one cigarette reduces a smoker's life expectancy by about 20 minutes on average: 17 minutes for men and 22 minutes for women.

The study, commissioned by the Department of Health, is based on the latest data from the British Doctors' Study, which was launched in 1951 as one of the world's first major studies of the effects of smoking, and the Million Women Study, which has tracked women's health since 1996.

People generally know that smoking is harmful, but they tend to underestimate how much. On average, smokers who do not quit lose about ten years of their lives. These are 10 years of precious time, life moments and important events with loved ones

- said Dr. Sarah Jackson, Principal Investigator of the Alcohol and Tobacco Research Group at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCL).

AddendumAddendum

While some smokers live a long time, others develop smoking-related diseases and even die from them by the age of 40. The difference is due to differences in smoking habits, such as the type of cigarette used, the number of puffs taken, and how deeply smokers drag.

People also differ in how sensitive they are to the toxic substances in cigarette smoke.

Recall

The European Commission has recommended strengthening the protection of people from exposure to secondhand smoke and aerosols through a revision of the Council Recommendation on Smokefree Environments. The new initiative calls on Member States to extend smokefree policies to key outdoor areas to better protect EU residents, especially children and young people.
