The IAEA is monitoring the situation at the Kursk NPP due to reports of military activity in the region. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called on the parties to exercise restraint and reminded them of the principles of nuclear safety.

The IAEA is monitoring the situation related to military activities reportedly taking place in the vicinity of the Kursk nuclear power plant, UNN reports citing a statement from the organization.

The IAEA notes that the Kursk NPP has six power units of two types of reactors: RBMK-1000 and VVER-510. Two RBMK-1000s are shut down and two are fully operational. Two VVER-510 units are under construction.

"In view of the reported significant military activity, I would like to remind all parties of the seven indispensable pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during armed conflict. In addition, I emphasize five specific principles that will help ensure nuclear safety and security that were established for the Zaporizhzhya NPP in the context of the current conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine and that are equally applicable in this situation. This includes, among other things, the need to ensure the physical integrity of the nuclear power plant. This applies regardless of where the nuclear power plant is located," IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said in a statement on the events in Russia.
