The driver who caused a fatal road accident in Kyiv yesterday has been detained in accordance with procedural order and is currently under guard, the Main Directorate of the National Police in the capital reported on Saturday, UNN writes.
Law enforcement officers detained the driver under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine
Investigators of the Kyiv Police Main Directorate, under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, have reportedly initiated criminal proceedings under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of road safety rules or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles, if they caused the death of several persons. The issue of notifying the driver of the suspicion is currently being resolved.
Context
On June 5, on Chokolivskyi Boulevard in Kyiv, a 49-year-old driver of a Mercedes car drove at high speed into an underground passage where people were present. As a result of the collision, a 12-year-old boy, a 47-year-old woman, and two police officers aged 21 and 23 were killed. Two men and a woman were also injured and are currently in the hospital.
As UNN reported, the person behind the wheel was a 49-year-old native of the Kherson region, a leader of a Baptist church, who had been repeatedly held accountable for speeding and causing road accidents.
