Marta Kos and Gheorghe Hajder discussed the pollution of the Dniester caused by Russian shelling during a rafting trip. The officials reviewed water monitoring and nature conservation.

European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Marta Kos and Moldovan Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder went kayaking on the Dniester River. During the route, they discussed issues of river pollution and the protection of natural areas. This was reported by News Maker, according to UNN.

Details

During the European Commissioner's official visit to Moldova, the officials kayaked the Slobozia-Dușca — Onițcani route. During the trip, the participants were caught in heavy rain and wind, but they continued their movement along the river.

"Rain and strong winds did not stop us; we continued paddling along the Dniester with the same determination with which Moldova follows its European path: despite the obstacles, we move forward,"

- stated Gheorghe Hajder.

The parties discussed the problem of Dniester pollution, which arose in March following Russia's strike on hydropower infrastructure in Ukraine. The Moldovan minister thanked the European Commissioner for the European Union's support in addressing this issue.

After completing the trip, the participants continued their dialogue with journalists and representatives of civil society. They discussed options for monitoring water quality and protecting natural areas.

Recall

Due to Russian shelling, oil product levels in the Dniester were recorded at 2.5 times the limit. The pollution is moving toward Odesa and threatens Moldova's drinking water intake.
