On Tuesday morning, a thick column of ash rose over the central part of the archipelago - approximately four kilometers high - as a result of a new eruption of Mount Kanlaon.
Specialists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the third level of danger remains - this means a significant probability of lava flows and more serious volcanic activity in the coming weeks. This level is rated as "elevated", according to a five-level threat scale.
Mount Kanlaon, which stretches across the provinces of Western and Eastern Negros, is one of more than twenty active peaks in this part of Asia. Its seismic activity has been observed since December last year, when a previous explosion was recorded.
The head of the institute, Teresito Bacolcol, said in a comment to local radio DWPM that changes in underground activity are currently being studied. Depending on the speed of movement of magmatic masses upwards, the level of danger may be changed. If the flow of molten material intensifies, there is a threat of moving to the fourth level. If the processes slow down, it is possible to reduce the alarm to the second degree.
