EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwai announced the agreement, which will come into force in January 2025.

Japan and the EU sign a new security and defense agreement that provides for more joint military exercises and cooperation.

The European bloc's head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, called the new agreement a historic and timely step.  The pact envisages additional joint military exercises, high-level dialogue and cooperation in the defense industry.
