Japan and the EU announce a new security and defense agreement

Japan and the EU have signed a new security and defense agreement that will enter into force in January 2025. The document envisages joint military exercises, high-level dialog, and cooperation in the defense industry.

EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwai announced the agreement, which will come into force in January 2025.

The European bloc's head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, called the new agreement a historic and timely step.  The pact envisages additional joint military exercises, high-level dialogue and cooperation in the defense industry.
