A bus from King David Primary School in the capital Kampala was returning from an educational trip to Sipi Falls when it was involved in an accident late Thursday evening in the village of Chekwatit, Kapchorwa district. According to authorities, three other adults and several children were injured.

On Friday, Education Minister Chrysostom Muyingo ordered an immediate suspension of all school excursions until further notice. The decision was made amid public outcry and calls to strengthen transport safety.

Reuters notes that road traffic accidents in Uganda are frequent due to poor vehicle condition and inadequate street lighting. Last year, 46 people died in a bus accident on the highway between Kampala and the city of Gulu.
