In Prykarpattia, the head of a police investigative unit has been detained on suspicion of extorting $5,000 for non-interference in a businessman's activities and avoiding the prosecution of his relative. The law enforcement officer has already been notified of the suspicion, and the investigation is ongoing. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, according to UNN.
Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, a notice of suspicion has been served to the deputy head of a police department – the head of the investigative department of one of the police stations of the Nadvirna District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
He is charged with receiving an improper benefit by an official holding a responsible position, combined with extortion, committed by prior conspiracy by a group of persons.
According to the investigation, during March–April 2024, the law enforcement officer extorted $5,000 from a businessman. In exchange for these funds, he promised not to interfere in the man's business activities and not to initiate criminal prosecution against his brother.
It was established that the businessman's brother was involved in proceedings regarding the submission of fictitious documents to the district Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center (TRC). To expedite the transfer of money, the official intimidated the businessman with the immediate mobilization of his brother.
To receive the funds, the law enforcement officer involved a mediator. Acting under the control of law enforcement, the businessman handed over the agreed amount at a gas station in Kolomyia. Following this, the head of the investigative department was detained in accordance with Article 615 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
A motion is being prepared for the court to select a preventive measure for the suspect and to suspend him from his position.
The possible involvement of other officials from the police station is also being investigated.
