The Moldovan authorities did not extend the agreement with the Russian Federation on the operation of the Russian Center for Science and Culture. Some functions will be transferred to the cultural department of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau.

The Moldovan government did not extend the agreement with Russia regarding the operation of the "Russian House" in Chisinau. This was reported by the head of "Rossotrudnichestvo" Igor Chaika, according to UNN citing DW.

Details

The Russian Center for Science and Culture operated in the capital of Moldova under an agreement signed in 1998 with Russia. The agreement was to be renewed every five years, but now the Moldovan authorities have not done so, Chaika reported. Some functions of the "Russian House" will be transferred to the cultural department of the Russian embassy in Chisinau.

"Rossotrudnichestvo" assured that it will continue "work on selecting foreign students for study at Russian universities under quotas of the Russian government," with plans for other activities "in the field of international humanitarian cooperation."

So-called "Russian Houses" operate in many countries around the world, including in Europe. In February 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova announced the unilateral denunciation of the Moldovan-Russian intergovernmental agreement on the establishment and operation of cultural centers. The reason was the violation of the country's airspace by Russian strike drones. The vote on the denunciation of the agreement took place in the Moldovan parliament in November 2025.
