Buying a new pair of shoes can sometimes turn into an unpleasant surprise: in the store, the shoes, ankle boots, or sneakers seemed perfect, but during the first walk they started to pinch and rub blisters.
The good news is that in most cases, the problem can be solved at home without ruining the appearance, structure, and quality of the new pair of shoes. The main thing is to know which materials can be adjusted and how to do it safely. All about this is in the new article by UNN.
Why shoes pinch and how to understand that they need to be stretched
There are several reasons why new shoes cause discomfort.
The most common ones are:
- natural asymmetry of the human body, when one foot is slightly larger than the other;
- evening swelling of the feet after physical exertion;
- mismatch between the standard factory last and the individual anatomical features of the foot. For example, a person may have a high instep, a wide joint area, or
prominent bones;
- new high-quality material (especially dense natural leather) has increased stiffness and requires some time for adaptation.
However, not every shoe can be stretched. Before trying home methods, it is important to consider two factors.
The first is the material from which the new pair of shoes is made. Natural leather, suede, and nubuck are best suited for stretching. The fibers in these materials are naturally elastic and capable of stretching.
Textile shoes (canvas, denim) are less amenable to adjustment, but they can also be slightly widened if desired.
But synthetic materials (eco-leather, leatherette, rubber, vinyl) have "shape memory" and quickly return to their original state after stretching, or they crack and deform.
The second factor to consider when stretching shoes is the direction of pressure. If the shoes pinch in width, in the instep, or rub in a specific local spot, it is quite realistic to increase them by 0.5 - 1 size. If the pair is too short and your toes press hard against the toe cap when bent, home procedures will hardly help. The length of the product is strictly limited by the size of the sole and the main stitched seams, which cannot be changed without completely resewing.
Home methods for stretching shoes
When using home remedies to stretch shoes, it is important to strictly follow the technology and consider the type of material. What works perfectly for strong leather can permanently ruin delicate suede or patent coating.
Stretching in width
To increase the fullness and width of shoes or boots, there are several effective methods. One of them is heat treatment with a hairdryer and using thick socks. It is suitable for shoes made of smooth natural leather.
Brief instructions for readers:
- put 1-2 pairs of thick wool or terry socks on your feet and forcefully put the tight pair of shoes on your feet;
- turn on a household hairdryer on medium heat mode and evenly heat the problem areas (toe cap, sides) with hot air for 20 - 30 seconds;
- keep the device at a distance of at least 15 - 20 cm to avoid melting the sewing glue;
- after heating, actively walk around in the shoes until they completely cool down to room temperature. The leather softened by heat will stretch and take the shape of your foot.
- after the procedure, be sure to treat the surface with a moisturizing cream or leather conditioner to restore the moisture-protective properties.
Another way to "adjust" factory shoes to your foot is to fill them with liquid and freeze them. The method is based on the simplest laws of physics: water expands in volume when turning into ice.
Brief instructions for readers:
- fill two strong, sealed plastic bags with water about a third full;
- securely tie the bags or close them with a slider;
- place the bags inside the shoes that need to be stretched, carefully spreading them in the toe area;
- put the pair in the freezer for 8 - 10 hours. As it freezes, the water will begin to gently stretch the
walls of the shoe from the inside;
- remove the shoes from the freezer and wait 10 - 15 minutes for the ice to thaw slightly;
- carefully pull the bags out of the shoes.
This method is suitable for dense leather and textiles, but is contraindicated for suede and patent leather shoes, as they will crack under the influence of low temperatures.
To change the shape of shoes to fit your feet, you can use an alcohol solution.
Brief instructions for readers:
- mix medical alcohol with water in a 1:1 ratio (or use regular vodka);
- treat the inner surface of the shoes with the resulting liquid using a spray bottle or a cotton pad;
- after that, put on thick socks and walk in the shoes for 30–40 minutes until completely dry.
Alcohol accelerates the softening of leather fibers.
Let us emphasize that before using alcohol to modify your new shoes, you must test the solution on an inconspicuous inner area to ensure that the lining or dye does not bleed.
Stretching in length
It is impossible to significantly increase the insole in length, but it is quite realistic to soften the rigid toe cap and heel counter, which will provide the necessary extra millimeters.
For this, you can use several methods.
The first of these is softening the heel counter with oil or glycerin. To do this, apply a little castor oil or pharmacy glycerin to the inner side and heel edge of the shoe and rub it thoroughly into the material. After that, leave the shoes for 15–20 minutes. When the time is up, you can begin to knead the heel counter of the shoe with your fingers or gently tap it with a hammer from the inside, being sure to place a piece of soft fabric on both sides to avoid damaging the appearance.
Another method is steam treatment. The inner part of the shoe should be held over steam from a boiling kettle or steam generator for 1–2 minutes. When the material becomes warm and slightly damp, tightly stuff the shoe with dry newspapers or paper towels, giving the heel and toe areas the desired shape. You can also put the steam-treated shoes on a thick sock and walk in them until completely dry. Shoes should only be dried at room temperature, away from radiators and heaters.
Special products and tools for stretching shoes
If you want to minimize risks and not experiment with folk recipes, it is best to use professional products and special tools that will help adjust the shape of a new pair.
Professional aerosols contain chemicals that gently break down the fibers of leather or suede, making them elastic without changing color or washing out the dye. The product is applied to problem areas from inside the shoes immediately before wearing or before installing a mechanical shoe stretcher.
And devices made of natural wood or durable plastic with a screw mechanism allow you to adjust the expansion of shoes in width and length with millimeter precision. Most such shoe trees come with plastic anatomical pads. These are inserted into special holes on the form exactly in the places where the shoes press on corns, bones, or protruding toe phalanges, providing targeted and safe correction.
When it is better to contact a workshop
Independent experiments on shoes can lead to torn seams, surface cracking, or deformation of the sole.
Contacting a professional cobbler is the only correct solution in such cases:
- the shoes are made of demanding materials: patent leather, thin chamois, premium suede, nubuck, or have a waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex, etc.);
- it concerns expensive, branded, or designer shoes;
- the product has a complex cut, many decorative elements, metal fittings, or a rigid internal toe cap;
- it is necessary to widen the shaft of high boots.
In shoe repair workshops, special electromechanical machines with adjustable heating and a set of shaped shoe trees are used, which allows for safe and even adaptation of the material without damaging the product.
Tips on how to avoid tight shoes in the future
To avoid spending time and resources on stretching new boots or shoes, it is important to follow simple rules even at the stage of trying on and purchasing:
- Buy shoes in the afternoon. By the end of the day, due to natural strain, the feet swell slightly and increase in volume. Shoes that seemed perfect in the morning may become too tight in the evening;
- Be sure to try on both shoes. Most people's feet are asymmetrical, so when choosing a size, you should always base it on both feet;
- Consider the width of the product. In addition to the insole length (standard size), pay attention to the width of the model, especially if you have a wide foot or a high instep;
- Leave a functional gap. There should be approximately 0.5 – 1 cm of free space between the longest toe and the toe of the shoe for free movement while walking;
- Try on shoes with appropriate socks. During the fitting, you must wear exactly the socks, hosiery, or stockings with which you plan to wear the chosen pair.
A smart choice of shoes when purchasing and a careful approach to their break-in will allow you to enjoy comfort every day without harming the health of your feet.
