Honda recalls 100,000 vehicles due to airbag issue

Honda is recalling 100,000 cars due to a defective passenger seat weight sensor. The malfunction poses a risk of accidental airbag deployment.

Honda has announced a recall of nearly 100,000 vehicles, some of which are nearly a decade old. These vehicles may have a faulty weight sensor in the front passenger seat, which could cause airbags to deploy during an accident when they should not. This was reported by Motor1, according to UNN.

Details

According to a recall report from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a capacitor on the sensor's circuit board may crack, allowing "environmental moisture" to enter and potentially causing an internal short circuit. If this occurs, the front passenger's frontal and knee airbags may deploy during a crash for occupants for whom deployment should be suppressed, increasing the risk of injury. This could apply to an infant in a child seat, a child, or a small-statured adult.

The recall affects the following models:

  • 2016–2022 Honda Civic (including Type R version)
    • 2016–2022 Honda Accord
      • 2017–2022 Honda CR-V
        • 2017–2022 Honda Pilot
          • 2017–2021, 2023, and 2025 Honda Ridgeline
            • 2018–2020 Honda Fit
              • 2018–2026 Honda Odyssey
                • 2019–2021 Honda HR-V
                  • 2019–2022 Honda Insight
                    • 2019–2021 Honda Passport
                      • 2017–2020 and 2022–2026 Acura MDX
                        • 2018–2021 and 2023 Acura TLX
                          • 2019–2024 Acura RDX

Honda determined that the cause of the problem was related to a "natural disaster" at a second-tier supplier's plant. The first-tier supplier replaced the base material of the seat sensor board with another that had not been properly verified for its intended use. This could create additional stress on the board and lead to cracking.

In affected vehicles, the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) warning light may illuminate, or the passenger airbag indicator may remain off.

This is not the first recall due to this issue. In early 2024, Honda already recalled 750,000 vehicles for the same reason. Now, the company is expanding the recall campaign for several reasons.

According to the report, the supplier made an error when calculating the production end date for the defective part, resulting in an incomplete identification of the initial list of vehicles subject to recall. Additionally, "insufficient verification procedures" were identified when determining vehicles equipped with defective replacement parts.

Following the initial recall, the automaker discovered that the problem could affect more vehicles and decided to announce a new recall. The company is aware of 228 warranty claims related to this fault; however, no reports of injuries or fatalities have been received.

Honda will resolve the issue by replacing the seat weight sensor.
