The Georgian parliament has elected former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili as president, 224 voters cast their ballots for him, the Georgian CEC reported, UNN reports citing Echo of the Caucasus.

The members of the electoral college, in which Georgian Dream had an absolute majority, elected Mikheil Kavelashvili as president. The former football player, a representative of the People's Power, which formally split from the ruling party, was the only candidate. The results of the vote were officially announced by CEC Chairman Giorgi Kalandarishvili. Kavelashvili received 224 votes, with one ballot being spoiled.
A single candidate needed 200 votes to win.
