The European Commission said that the European Union is ready to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, UNN reports citing DW.

According to a European Commission spokeswoman quoted by the dpa news agency on Monday, December 30, European infrastructure is flexible enough to allow gas from third countries to flow through alternative routes to Central and Eastern Europe.
"The impact of stopping transit through Ukraine on the security of EU supplies is limited," the European Commission representative assured.
The European Commission said it has been working in coordination with member states of the European community for more than a year to prepare for alternative schemes. Europe's gas infrastructure has been strengthened by significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) import capacity, they added.
In recent years, measures to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy sources have also strengthened the reliability of gas supply, the European Commission further stated.

The contract for the supply of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine expires on January 1, 2025.
