On Friday, March 22, the EU Council imposed new sanctions against those involved in the death of russian politician alexei navalny in a maximum security colony. This was reported by UNN with reference to the press service of the EU Council.
Details
It is noted that Today, the Rada decided to impose restrictive measures against 33 individuals and two organizations involved in the sudden death of rssian opposition politician alexei navalny in a high-security colony.
This decision was made under the European Union's Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
The slow murder of alexei navalny by the Kremlin regime is a vivid reminder of its utter disregard for human life. Today's sanctions demonstrate our determination to hold russia's political leadership and authorities accountable for ongoing human rights abuses in russia
The new lists include the colonies where alexei navalny was held from June 2022 until his death, the penal colony IK-6 and the strict regime penal colony IK-3.
Also, the head of the CF-3 Vadim Kalinin and various deputy heads of the colony were sanctioned.
The EU emphasizes that both colonies are known for physical and psychological pressure, complete isolation, torture and violence against prisoners.
In addition, the EU Council added the following judges to the sanctions list:
- Andrei Suvorov, who last year sentenced alexei navalny to 19 years in a special regime colony in inhumane conditions,
- Kirill Nikiforov, who dismissed his lawsuit against the punishment cell 6 to challenge his transfer to the punishment cell for 12 days,
- as well as Evgenia Nikolaeva and Natalia Dudar who issued a number of rulings against political opponents, including Mr. navalny, contributing to political repression in russia.
The sanctions also targeted high-ranking officials of the penitentiary system and the Ministry of Justice, who were either responsible for the execution of sentences against alexei navalny and other political opponents or failed to ensure the protection of human and civil rights and freedoms.
With today's lists, restrictive measures under the EU's Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime now apply to 104 individuals and entities and 23 organizations from multiple countries
Addendum
Persons included in the sanctions list are subject to asset freezes, and the provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to them or for their benefit is prohibited.
In addition, the individuals on the list are subject to a ban on entry to the EU.
It is also noted that the EU is deeply concerned about the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in russia.
ussia's illegal, unjustified and unprovoked aggressive war against Ukraine has further accelerated internal repression in the country, sharply curtailing freedom of opinion and expression, as well as media freedom and introducing military censorship.
