In July, Romanian Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu announced that farmers would receive compensation of 200 to 250 euros per hectare of damaged crops.
The Romanian national news agency Agerpres reported that the total amount of funds expected to be spent on drought compensation is between 500 and 600 million euros.
Corn plantations in the south of the Republic of Moldova have been affected by drought by 70-100%, and sunflower plantations by 60-80%. This was stated by Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea, who asked farmers in arid areas to make better choices about the crops they plant. A group of experts should prepare recommendations for low-risk crops and varieties within the next two weeks, "which will allow the sector to withstand climate change, which is getting worse every year," the minister added.
