Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko spoke about crimes against children in three regions - death from exhaustion, sale for begging and torture. The mothers have been notified of suspicion and preventive measures in the form of detention without bail have been imposed, reports UNN.
A child must be protected. The safest place for a child should be their own home. Parents, first and foremost, must take care of children, raise them and ensure a safe childhood. But this is not always the case
The Prosecutor General disclosed information about crimes recorded in three different regions - "three separate stories, one common tragedy – betrayal of childhood by mothers".
Dnipro. A two-month-old girl died of hunger and exhaustion. From birth, she did not receive even the most basic care that every infant needs. The mother essentially ignored her daughter. Even when the child's condition became critical, she did not seek medical help. And after her daughter's death, she hid her body in a stroller in a closet and went to a friend's house with her older son.
Rivne region. A mother turned her own children into live merchandise. She sold her 11-year-old daughter and sons aged 9 and 15 for 30,000 hryvnias. Instead of childhood, education and a future, they were planned to be taken to Kyiv and exploited for begging. Previously, the woman used her older daughter as a drug courier. The woman was not interested in the further fate of the children.
Ivano-Frankivsk region. A mother tortured her 15-year-old son with cerebral palsy for years. She systematically abused alcohol and, while intoxicated, beat the child for refusing to eat and other household reasons. During another attack, she struck him in the face and knees, and then deliberately hit his head against the wall. After the abuse was uncovered, the boy was hospitalized. He is now in the hospital.
In all these cases, the victimized children, as well as their brothers and sisters, have been removed from the dangerous environment. The mothers have been notified of suspicion and preventive measures in the form of detention without bail have been imposed
But, according to him, responsibility cannot be limited only to the direct perpetrators.
When children die of hunger, become victims of exploitation, or suffer violence for years, this is not just a verdict on the system. It is a matter of responsibility for everyone who was supposed to protect a child and did not do so. Legal assessment should be given not only to the actions of those who committed crimes, but also to the inaction of all those who were obliged to protect children, had the authority to do so, but did not fulfill their duty. Those who, through their indifference or official negligence, allowed children to remain alone with violence
According to him, this is exactly what juvenile prosecutors work on every day. We will continue to firmly uphold justice in every criminal proceeding regarding crimes against children.
And this work yields results. Today, in the Vinnytsia region, we achieved in the appellate court a harsher punishment for a mother for the death from starvation of her 10-year-old son with a disability. The court of first instance sentenced her to 3 years in prison. The prosecutor's office appealed the verdict as too lenient. The appellate court supported the prosecutor's position and increased the punishment to 6 years in prison. Violence, indifference, and exploitation of children have no place in a civilized society. No exceptions. No excuses. No compromises
