Christmas drink recipes: how to warm up on Christmas Eve - from uzvar to eggnog

In winter evenings, you want comfort and warmth, especially on Christmas Eve. UNN has prepared a selection of interesting warming drinks for you, from traditional Ukrainian uzvar to more exotic ones.

Broth with spices by Yevhen Klopotenko

In this recipe, the chef recommends using honey instead of sugar, and you can add other spices to taste in addition to cloves.

Ingredients:

350 g dried fruit (or a ready-made uzvar kit)

3 l of water

7-8 tbsp. l. Honey

3 clove buds cloves

1 tbsp l. poppy seeds

Cooking steps:

- Put the dried fruit and berries or a set of them in a colander and rinse thoroughly under running water.

- After that, put it in a large saucepan and pour 3 liters of water. Cook on low heat for 30 minutes under the lid, so that the taste is more saturated.

- Turn off the heat and add 3 clove buds and 1 tablespoon of poppy seeds, mix well and leave the uzvar to cool.

- When the broth has cooled slightly and is warm, add the honey. Stir until it dissolves. We add 7-8 tbsp of honey, but you can add a little less or more, taste.

- Cool the drink well and serve it to the table.

Recipe for non-alcoholic punch from the wife of the German Ambassador to Ukraine

The wife of the German Ambassador to Ukraine, Ms. Nicole Jeger-Koidl, shared a proven recipe for non-alcoholic punch. Ingredients: 1 liter of apple juice 1 liter of dark grape juice 500 ml of orange juice 500 ml of cherry juice (optional) 2 lemons 6 PCs. cloves 1 stick cinnamon 2 PCs. star anise ginger, nutmeg and cardamom (optional). Mix and heat the juices, gradually adding the remaining ingredients. It is important not to bring to a boil. Leave to infuse for 20 minutes. Done!

Mulled wine (alcoholic)

Traditional mulled wine smells like warm holiday spices. We offer an interesting recipe from Hector Jimenez-Bravo.

Ingredients:

Apple cider - 500 ml (can be replaced with apple juice);

Red wine-750 ml;

Cinnamon-2 sticks;

Orange juice - 125 ml;

Honey - 0.5 cups;

Anise is to taste.

Preparation:

- Mix cider and wine.

- Add honey, cinnamon and a pinch of anise.

- Heat the drink for about 3-4 minutes, but do not let it boil.

- Finally, add orange juice.

- Carefully choose apple cider-it should be made from natural ingredients.

Another famous chef, Jamie Oliver, offers his own interesting recipe for mulled wine.

Ingredients:

Clementine (mandarin variety) – 2 pieces;

Lemon-1 PC;

Lime - 1 pc;

Powdered sugar-200 g;

Carnation-6 PCs;

Cinnamon-1 stick;

Bay leaf-3 pcs;

Nutmeg-1 whole, for grater;

Vanilla - 1 PC;

Star anise – 2 pieces;

Vanilla - 1 PC;

Red wine-2 bottles.

Preparation:

- Using a paring knife, cut large pieces of peel from the clementines, lemon and lime.

- Put the sugar in a large saucepan, add the peel pieces and squeeze out the clementine juice. Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaf and rub the nutmeg 10-12 times.

- Cut the vanilla pods in half and add, then pour in enough red wine to coat the sugar.

- Heat until the sugar is completely dissolved in the red wine, then bring to a boil. Keep the mixture on the fire for about 4-5 minutes, or until you get a nice thick syrup.

- When the syrup is ready, reduce the heat to low and add star anise and other wine.

- Gently heat the drink and after about 5 minutes, when it becomes warm and delicious, pour it into heat-resistant cups/glasses and serve.

grape juice mulled wine

Ingredients:

900 grams of red grape juice,

150 grams of water,

sour apple,

spices: cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, star anise,

lemon zest.

Preparation:

- Wash the Apple and cut it into slices.

- In a large saucepan, pour the juice, water, add the spices, zest and Apple. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover with a lid and let stand for an hour.

- Before serving, preheat the drink to the desired temperature.

spicy cranberry Hot Toddy

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar-free cranberry juice

½ Small orange

2 cinnamon sticks

a small piece of fresh ginger

½ Teaspoon black pepper peas

½ Teaspoon cloves

2 star anise

¼ - 1/2 cup honey

100-120 g  bourbon

Preparation:

- In  a small saucepan, pour the cranberry juice, add the orange, cinnamon sticks, ginger, peppercorns, cloves, and anise, and bring to a boil over medium heat. 

- Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. 

- Then remove from heat and cover for a few more minutes.

- Remove the lid, strain the mixture and return it to the pan. 

- Add honey to taste.

- Pour 50-60 g  of bourbon into each glass , add hot juice with spices. Stir and enjoy 

French hot chocolate

Ingredients per serving:

30 g dark chocolate (high in cocoa)

1 cup milk

1 cup sweet cream

cinnamon, vanilla, small pieces of chocolate, whipped cream and other additives if desired

Preparation:

- Heat the milk and cream over low heat in a thick-bottomed saucepan. If you want to add vanilla, you can add it at this stage.

-While the milk-cream mixture is heating up, crush the chocolate. When the mixture is hot, add the chocolate to it and stir until it melts.

- Pour hot chocolate into a cup. You can decorate with whipped cream, cinnamon and pieces of chocolate.

eg-Leg

This drink is popular in many countries of the world, most of all it is consumed during the Christmas holidays.

Ingredients:

Milk-500 ml

cream-400 ml

sugar – 150 g

fresh eggs-6 PCs

rum or bourbon-350 ml

vanilla-1 pod

cinnamon-3 sticks

nutmeg - 1 tsp

Preparation:

- Combine milk, cream, cinnamon, vanilla seeds and nutmeg. Bring to a boil. Then turn off the heat and let the milk cool.

- Divide the eggs into yolks and whites. Put the whites in the refrigerator.

- Beat egg yolks with sugar into a thick mass.

- Gradually pour in the cooled milk, continuing to beat until the mixture is smooth.

- Add rum and stir to combine.

- Pour into glass bottles and refrigerate for at least 12 hours.

- Before serving, beat the egg whites with a little sugar until soft peaks form. Carefully transfer to EG-nog and stir to combine.

- Pour the drink into serving glasses and serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg
